Somalia Hosts First Batch of Sudanese Scholarship Students as Both Nations Renew Historic Partnership

MOGADISHU – Somalia has officially welcomed the first group of Sudanese students to Mogadishu under a new scholarship program funded by the Somali government. The program aims to strengthen educational ties between Somalia and Sudan, reflecting decades of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

The welcoming ceremony, presided over by the Minister of Education, Culture, and Higher Education of the Federal Government of Somalia, marked a historic moment for both countries. These students are the first recipients of the scholarship initiative, which enables Sudanese youth to pursue higher education at Somali National University.

A Symbol of Shared History and Solidarity

For many years, Sudan served as a primary destination for Somali students seeking higher education during Somalia’s challenging periods. The new scholarship program reverses this role, with Somalia now offering educational opportunities to Sudanese students.

During the ceremony, the Minister emphasized Somalia’s respect for the historical and brotherly relationship with Sudan. He highlighted that Sudan’s support in the past remains an “unforgettable debt of gratitude” and underlined that this initiative is a way to honor the shared history between the two peoples while investing in Sudan’s future leaders.

Integration into Somali National University

The students will be enrolled across various faculties at Somali National University, the country’s leading public institution of higher learning. The Ministry of Education confirmed that this first cohort is just the beginning, and additional groups of Sudanese students are scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks to continue their studies.

Promoting Regional Cooperation Through Education

The scholarship program reflects Somalia’s commitment to contributing to regional stability and development through educational diplomacy. By providing these opportunities, Somalia demonstrates its growing capacity to support youth from neighboring countries while fostering closer ties with Sudan.

This initiative is seen as a significant step in strengthening the long-standing bilateral relationship and ensuring that education remains a bridge for cooperation and friendship between Somalia and Sudan.
